I'm 18 years old and I shoplifted from a military base store in Nevada and was apprehended. I'm being charged federally (since it's considered stealing federal gov. property) and expected to go to court. Also to pay the $200 administrative fee. I already got my I.D. taken away and the priviledges that come with it. The thing is I (regretfully) only stole $5.00 worth of makeup. FIVE DOLLARS. I know this is no excuse on lessening my charge, but I cannot believe I did this. It was a very very stupid mindless action on my part. I plan on not having a lawyer and asking for a plea bargain or probabtion, and pleaing guilty. I have a clean record too.

I need to know if not having a lawyer is okay for my situation or if I'll get eaten alive in court without one.
I also would like to know what to expect in a federal court. (What types of questions will be asked, who will be there, etc.)

Then I'd like to know if my charge is considered a felony or a misdeamenor on a federal level. Will this stay on my record regardless if it's a misdemeanor or not?? Will I ever have the chance to remove it from my record??

I accept my mistake and deserve what I deserve, but is being charged federally too harsh?? Can I transfer to a state court?? I have tons of questions, any information will be much appreciated.
Please any advice would help.

Get a lawyer. Even a public defender is better than no help at all.
