I was caught stealing and was charged with Grand Theft in California. The amount stolen was about $500. It was a first time offence, though I did admit on the spot on past thefts at that store (Though it was not caught, or on tape, I promised to pay for the items taken in the past through a signed permissory note). I was sent to the county jail, but through OR was released the next day and (I believe anyway...) the bail will be changed. However, I still need to go to court. That store was the only place I stole from and I have already promised to pay back everything I've stolen. I've never once had a previous criminal offence, juvenile or not. In all honesty, I just want this to just be an example of what I should never do again, and live my life. I'll pay any charges I have to, I just don't want it to affect my future career (not in accounting or law enforcement, though possibly government). So is there any possible way to reduce my charge to a misdemeanor, and hopefully get it dismissed, get a diversion, or better yet expunged? The court date is in two weeks. I'll do almost anything

Edit: I've read up on other people's posts, and I will enroll in an anti shoplifting course ASAP (The NASP one by the way). Only problem is that I can't seem to find the name of the judge. Do I have to call for that information?

Telling Judge about enrollment in NASP course can wait till your court date. What you need right now is a Lawyer! You are facing felony charges the likihood you can ACD, Diversion or the like is almost nil. A career in law Enforcement or several other careers is in serious doubt at this point. You rLawyer might get charged reduced to misdemeanor and "perhaps" you can have it expunged later. Enrolling in course is good start this will surely help your cause.

You will not know the name of the judge until you know what court your matter has been assigned to. Even then, you may not know the NAME of the judge, only the department or court to which your matter has been assigned. Even knowing the name of the judge wouldn't do you any good beforehand.

Your attorney can help you work this out. if you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you.

I'm truly grateful for all the help.
One more question however...
In all honesty, what are my chances of getting this reduced to a misdemeanor, considering I've admitted to previous attempts (but repaid them). However, the total amount that is going to be included in the trial is only one previous attempt I believe.
I just don't want such a harsh stigma to be placed on me for the rest of my life, and I know I should not have done this in the first place.

It would be unfair for us to speculate on that. Your Attorney will be best to advise you on that

Understood. Still, thanks for the reply. I'll be calling around for criminal defense attorneys then.
