Hello. I am an Independent Contractor -trucking in California. I've been doing this for almost 5 years. I was "hired" by a third party logistics (3PL) company which has the contract with the shipper -an office supply company. When I started this venture, all I have to do was getting a truck, permits and be ready to work. I was assigned a delivery route and after a while I had the opportunity to take on another route too. So I have two routes and two trucks as of today. However, now the 3PL company wants to put the routes up for bid. All of them!! So, I know I am not the only one that is worried about loosing his/her job. If someone else comes along and his/her bid is higher than mine, then I am out of business!! I really believe it is not just unfair but perhaps illegal. This 3PL company not just has not raised our paying rate for the last 4 years, but it changes the contract to its convenience (now the contract is month to month). I do not know what is behind this new "corporate plan", but I think I should not have to pay to keep working my delivery routes just the way I have been doing it since the very beginning. I believe that if it were a new route or one that is going to be vacant, then a bidding process could make sense. But why the ones that are not vacant at all? why jeopardize the way of living of so many contractors? Is this actually possible? Thanks for your input.

There is nothing illegal about an employer changing the conditions of employment unless you have a bona fide and legally enforceable contract that specifically prohibits it.
