Changing the lease

Hi,

I signed a 1 yr lease on a house 3 months ago. When we discussed the monthly rent payment the landlord gave me the option of paying $700 in rent, or paying $825 in rent, and they would pay my power bill and water bill out of that so that I didn't have to switch them into my name. I chose to go with the $825, and I thought of that as just combining 3 bills into one.

So my lease stated that my monthly rent would be $825, which would include the landlord paying the power bill (as long as my monthly usage didn't exceed that of the average of the last 5 years), and the landlor paying the water bill. It also stated that if I had any over night guests for more than 7 days at a time, I had to inform the landlord. I reconciled with my exhusband since I moved there and requested that he be allowed to move in starting in May. I also asked if the rent would be raised due to him moving in there. My landlord stated that he would not raise my rent but that they would turn the utility bills over to me. I took that as my monthly rent would be $700, since I would now be paying all my own utilities.

The landlord is saying, since my exhusband moved in, I now have to pay the full $825 a month, plus my own utilities.

Does this sound right?
Can he legally change the "terms" of the lease if I dont' agree to them?

Clarify with the landlord on why he told you he would not raise the rent, but that the lease you signed shows a rent increase? This is likely legal since you have 1 more person moving in, and a written contract usually supercedes any verbal agreement.
