My jurisdiction is: Overland Park, Ks

I have recently been looking for an apartment and was told that I owe money to my previous apartment. Now a year later they are saying I own them money $519.02 to be exact. I found this out due to not receiveing my new apartment for nonpayment to my previous apt. The managment says it is the remainder of October 2007 rent. I admit to breaking my lease two months early only on an agreement( i pay the prorated rent and they keep my security deposit) with the proporty manager at the time(has been fired since) in writing (notice of vacating) it shows I moved out of the apartment on October 15th 2007 and paid my prorated rent. That is why I own any money. Now a year later it's said i do. I have been in contact with the management and now is refusing to speak with me. I've shown them proof that is was an error on the management at the time part, and now I'm still unable to rent an apartment due to the reference of the previous apartment. I don't know what else to do. So i paid the apartment complex (just to get the apartment) should i cancel the check and take another route with this? Oh and it;s never been to collection or even notified to their laywers i owe them money after over a year. I have contacted the laywers and they say i am at a zero balance.

Why are they saying that you owe them money? Probably because they are claiming they used your security deposit to pay for "damage" and still want to collect rent. But if the lawyers say you have a zero balance, then I'm confused. You should write a certified letter, return receipt, confirming the conversation with the attorneys about a zero balance and send to both attorneys and client. What I don't understand is you are having problems with the landlord telling potential new landlords that you owe money? That could be a defamation claim and you may want to alert the prior landlord of this as well in your confirmation of conversation letter.
