Could we have more details please in regard to your specific situation & also the name of your state.

Thanks.

The rights of the mother are equal to the rights of the father.

Unless the child was born without benefit of marriage.

Then, the mother's rights could said to be supreme, until the father goes to court and proves paternity.

However, we don't know the specific situation here. Is this just a "general" question or is OP talking about a specific situation such as in a divorce?

Child custody rights for mothers differ from situation to situation and also from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. It must be noted that the rights of custody are in the favor of the mother, most times, especially if the behavior of the father is abusive or tending towards domestic violence.

I guess the OP will come back & tell us if this is in regard to a specific situation.

I never want to know all of the facts.

I don't seek a lawyer-client relationship, so the bare bones facts are all I need to render a general opinion about these legal dilemmas.

I understand but I didn't want to assume what the OP's "complete" question was when we didn't have much info.

You answered on the info presented. I asked for add'l. info before answering. Whether add'l. info would change the answer, I don't know. I have seen threads where the Mother's rights & Father's rights were not equal.
