child support issues

I am a father who has been overpaying child support for years and when I do get behind (I always catch up), I get beaten up in court and get threatened with jail. How can a person be thrown in jail for being poor? I'm not willfully violating any court order, but if I don't have the money, I don't have the money! My family goes without everything, while the custodial parent is buying new cars and going on vacations. My gas service to my house was shut off because I didn't have the money to pay them either! But, throw me in jail, and let my family live on the streets. I am currently going to court for back support of $1,000 and am afraid I will go to jail. My current wife is having a nervous breakdown and my other children are denied many things in life, sometimes even food. But throw me in jail for being poor, and when the custodial parent gets back from her caribbean cruise, she will be very happy about it.

How can you say you are overpaying? Are you paying the court ordered amount? If your income has reduced, then you need to apply for a reduction. Not sure what state you are in but you might want to google your states child support guidelines to see what you should be paying.
