I have been divorced about 4 years w/ 50/50 custody of our two boys ages 8 & 11. I give her $450 a paycheck 26 times a year for child support. She has always made more than me, her about 150k / year me 40-70k / year as I'm in sales so not always the same but I've never made more than 70. My question is she is always asking for me to pay additional expenses i.e. sports fees, sporting equip, Dr co-pays, prescriptions, etc. I don't mind paying more for things on occasion but it is now taking up more than I can handle. I currently make about $3500 per month and after taxes & support pmt taken out I end up with $750 of which I give her an additional $100ish so becoming hard to live on this amount. Her claim is that w/ 50/50 custody we split expenses & the support was supposed to cover it but isn't so I need to pay her the difference.

I truly don't wan't to not pay my share but I'm running up my debt & it's hard to get by.

Any advice???

What does your court order say about extra-curricular fees? If it doesn't say you have to pay half, then you don't have to pay.

Just curious about the 50/50, though. Is that 50% placement per the court order? Do you have your children 50% of the time? If so, then why are you paying support?

I agree stop paying her anything not court ordered. Just ignore her requests. Also have you googled your states child support guidelines? You might be paying too much especially since you have 50% placement and if you are making less, it might be time to apply for an adjustment. Stop giving her extra money. That is what her child support is for. Especially since she makes so much more than you. Please make sure you are not overpaying her support. Time to do some calculations on your end. Grow a backbone to mom and tell her no.

Thanks for the info so far!! Yes we share 50% custody of both kids & I have them half the time. I pay her child support & she pays the bills, daycare, Ins, etc.

I live in Texas so how do I go about looking into an adjustment? Also will I need an attorney? If so any advice on finding a good one I can afford on my limited budget?

Thanks!!!
