Last weekend I got caught shoplifting. A cop came and took down my license info and told me I would have to pay a citiation and a civil demand. I was not arrested, fingerprinted or given anything on the spot. after about 30 minutes they left me go home.
So I got a citation tuesday from the police department with the amount I owe to them and it says that I do not have to appear in court. Does this mean that I won't have a criminal record since I never had to be fingerprinted or mugg-shotted? When I paid the fine (by check-didn't go to court) I had to state that I plead "no contest" to the ordinance violated (WI ordinance 39.15), so can someone please shed some light on this? I'm getting mixed answers.
