Approximately two weeks ago I took my younger sister with me just because she wanted to tag along while I shop. (I knew I should have left her at home!) Anyways, she always wanders off in stores but I just figured she was looking for something for herself.
Come to find out she stole a bag. The police were called and we were both banned. She received a civil citation but I did not. The officers and the security guard disagreed on if I was involved. The next day one of the officers came to our house and said all my sister had to do is write out a statement and attend a community service program. I specifically asked if any charges or anything would come towards me and he said no. Then two days ago my sister and I received two separate letters. Both said we each owe $400, so $800 total. I was upset about being banned from one of my favorite stores for a crime I didn't commit (I was accused of being an accomplice since I didn't steal anything), but I am absolutely livid about this fine. My father refuses to pay for it (understandable), and is making me pay for mine AND my sister's.
As stated before, I am a 17 year old girl. I don't have $800. Will I get in trouble if I don't pay it? The letter says it will go up 10% by June 25 and continue to do so if I don't pay it. Should I be worried? I have seen a lot of forums say to ignore it but I am still frightened. I couldn't pay it if I wanted to.
I don't know if it makes a difference, but I am in Florida.
