I have been paying a civil judgment through wage garnishments. The debt was nearly paid off but I lost my job. I would like to settle with the amount that already has been paid. I have asked an attorney to contact the collecting firm but the firm has not responded. I also wrote a letter with no response. I feel like I am stuck in limbo. What should I do?

You should have taken the money you spent on the attorney and sent them a letter offering to settle the remaining balance for the check enclosed. Put on the back of the check, "Endorsement of this check constitutes acceptance of the settlement to a zero balance."

That would do it.
