I received a letter from barristers in Toronto asking for payment on a theft charge I have pending , I havent gone to court but I want to know if I just have to pay whatever number they say, the barrister wants 8000 . Without giving lots od detail the number is three times the counts against me.

I suggest you speak with a barrister about this before doing anything.

It's best not to do anything during the pendency of any criminal matter.

Google "civil demand Ontario" and Google the name of the firm that sent you the demand.
Always investigate everything.

This is called "Civil Demand" Learn more here http://www.parentnook.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=161&t=3934&p=10649&hilit=civil+demand#p10649 its designed so retails can recoup the cost to fight theft. They amount has nothing to do with cost of items stolen so making that comparison means squat. Its the law in Canada, US and UK to name a few. There can be serious and long term consequences for not paying. You can also see fine triple! If your fighting the theft charge then contact the law firm that sent letter and explain you are fighting charge and wish to place this issue on hold pending outcome of your case. If your not fighting charge then its best to pay this or make payment arrangements
