Claim My Loaned Money Back, Only Check Images, No written Agreement

Someone owes me 1200 dollars.I don't have a written agreements but all check images which he got cash with. You could see them in the attached.

The whole thing is that: I'm a foreign ph.d candidate in UNC charlotte. My neigborhood, a back guy wanted to teach my English for no charge. In the attached form, the first check is a 50 dollars gift I gave to him.
After that, he began to borrow frequently.He said he would pay me all the money back when he got tax return. Unfortunally, he only paid me back 150 dollars and then moved out in May.I stayed in China for late May and June.When I came back, he never anwers my phone and i don't know where he is.

Please check the attached! Do you think I could get my money back?

Could court assign me a interpreter because my native language is not English?

You can sue him in small claims court, but you'll need to find him first.

Then you'll need to convince the judge that he owes you the money, and it will be your word against his. If you can produce copies of the cheques he cashed, that will be in your favour.

Then you'll need to collect on the judgment you receive against him. That might prove to be very difficult.

I very much doubt the court would assign you an interpreter. You could probably bring your own interpreter if you need one.

I heard that I have to satify the Demand Letter Statue. How to make it if he doesn't use Email and never anwers my phone?

I haven't found him yet.

What if the judge believe what i claim, but he simply don't have the money to pay me back? Also, I'll move to another state next year. It would be hard for me to collect my money then.
