So my court date is approaching and I have a few questions:

(Offense: North Carolina, Misdemeanor Larceny, $20 resaleable, first ever offense, 17)

I was thinking of going the public defender route.

So, when asked how I plead do I just say 'Not guilty' and then request legal council immediately afterward?

How much time will I get to talk to the court appointed attorney?

Would they be able to help me find a way to keep this off my record (do they have the knowledge and are willing)?

If they enter a plea bargain (or whatever it's termed) will there still be a trial?

If there is still a trial and I'm found guilty, would it be worse than just pleading guilty in the first place?

Since I'm under 18 (though still not a minor in North Carolina [16 and under]) must my parents accompany me to court?

Thanks in advance. Love the site, and I'll be the first to leave a testimonial after this is done and over.

Yes

Not much in fact it spossible the PD will have already worked out some kind of deal before talking to you. If deal sounds good then fine, if not then tell PD your desires

Public Defenders are Lawyers just like ones you hire. They should have knowledge of all options available to you

If you and DA agree to plea deal its offered to Judge if Judge accepts it then case is over no trial

Even though I'll be 3 days from 18 and am not being tryed in juvenile court (under 16 in NC? My parents were not notified by the police when I received the citation

Its possible you might not need your parents but I would call court to be sure. If you show up without them and they are required your case will be delayed

Due to a defendant being a minor. This is the requirement for minors facing criminal charges. Its best if you ask your Attorney or court if their (your parent) presence is required
