There are no consequences until you are convicted or plead guilty.

If that happens, or when it happens, you'll pay a stiff fine, more fees, court costs, be sentenced to probation and deferred adjudication, pay more money to the county probation office, do 40-80 hours of community service, you could be subjected to random drug tests, unannounced home inspections, and if you survive; the matter should be dismissed.

The counties in Texas no longer provide public defenders in most of these cases. However, you'll learn more about that when you appear.

At that appearance you plead not guilty, make no statements you'll be given more directions, another hearing date will be set, and you wait. Whatever you o don't plead guilty, don't blab, don't get in any additional trouble. This is your ONE mulligan. Don't blow it.

Just because you cant afford an Attorney doesn't mean you cant talk to one. Start calling Lawyers many offer free consultations get and many as you can. Ask about your defense options be sure to ask about ACD or Diversion as possible plea options

The good news here is that if they don't provide an attorney it means that they are not filing criminal charges but an infraction. They will pile on some fines for you to pay and you will walk away without a criminal record.

Yes, 99% of the time, no jail time.
The most anyone could get is a few days in county.
That rarely happens.
You're right except it will count as a criminal conviction.
Albeit an insignificant one in the eyes of many people, nevertheless its still a theft conviction.
