Hi

I recently was hired by a IT company. I was employed with the agreement of minimal travel within my region because I had just returned to the states and wanted to settle in. My training was in Washington DC for 2 weeks. I was staying in Virginia Beach with family at the time. Within the 3rd day of travel I got a phone call asking where I was and that I was supposed to be on site in California for the next 3 weeks.

I reluctantly went along with it because I needed the money and with the economy being the way that its been I was lucky to have a job. Well they gave me a company american express with a 2000 dollar spending limit. Within the first 4 weeks of travel from California and then Maryland immediately afterwards I had accumilated 5300 dollars on my american express card before I got my first reimbursement check of 2500 dollars well for some odd reason I wasnt able to pay the full amount of 2500 dollars because the max payment was 986 dollars for that first month.

Which I was lucky that I wasnt able to because I would have needed it for my next site in South Carolina... Long story short I wasnt getting the money fast enough to pay the card off because I was constantly in travel and had to juggle the money the best I could paying for hotels, car rentals, gas and food costs and writing expense reports and taping the reciepts to a peices of paper in chronological order. While making as much of a payment I could towards the American Express account.

It all got way to far out of hand and the company had to bail out a few employees who had the same problem by paying the outstanding balances on our accounts for us and taking 50% of our paychecks to pay it back. Which I am fine with that. However; they wanted me to sign some contract saying that we were responsible for the money and if we were fired we would immediately have to pay the money back.

Thats all fine for me except they didnt make a safety net for us. Everything seems to be covered on their part its a win win situation for them but whos to say that they wont fire me as soon as I sign that contract? Which seems to be what they are aiming for because I asked the american express guys about my card being canceled and they said that it wasnt their doing it was my company... They said that it wasn't needed anymore.

Any advice that you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated

This is very unclear. To the extent it makes sense at all, I suspect the company does not have your interests at heart.

I don't understand. If these are charges you incurred on behalf of the business, why is the company taking 50% of your paychecks to pay it back? Shouldn't they be reimbursing the entire amount?

Seeing as it's already on your credit card, you're already responsible for paying off the balance. What is it they're demanding you pay back?

I wouldn't sign anything.
