Complex telling potential tenants my vacated unit is unavailable

I took a personal and professional opportunity and moved out of my single unit in a prestigious complex in NY. Single units are expensive and hard to come by. I signed the "release" paperwork and it was understood that I would be responsible for rent until a new tenant was found, which would be quickly since the units are so popular.

I received two emails yesterday from individuals who had seen my post on Craigslist and had called to confirm that my single was indeed vacated and ready to rent immediately. They were both told, "No singles available, we're full, try the beginning of next semester." They spoke with 2 different people.

How long as the complex been sabotaging my attempts to get a replacement in there?? I have paid 2 months of rent and I haven't lived there. I turned in the keys because at one point they thought someone I referred to the leasing office was going to take the unit and now they won't give me the keys back!

Any advice as to what I should do? Whose to say I might not already have someone moved in there by now!
