Hi guys,

Last month I was fired from my job @ Store name for giving a discount to a customer who was not authorized to be on a account. I signed a document stating I will repay the company for this loss and was then terminated.
I accept my mistake and am ready to move on.

I am now being considered for a position in another retail store. I am concerned because I just read about the retail theft database and how they share information regarding theft. I didn't literally steal anything, but I understand that I caused my previous company damages.. Will my incident at Store name show up in my background check?

Thanks!

Now to answer you. If the store you were fired from is a subscriber to any retail theft database they very likely inputted your name. Now if your new potential employer is also a subscriber then they could view this. Keep in mind also that they could contact your former employer who can legally say why you were fired

Thanks for the ninja edit. What if I had a store manager at my previous job who could vouch for me and put in a good word? He is willing to state my innocence and rehire eligibility if necessary.

Your not inncocent or guilty since you did not go to court. However any statement you made can work against you. That being said it is not good for your friend to risk his employment by vouching for you

This situation sucks. Because I didn't literally steal anything. I just made a bad choice on one transaction. If my name does show up on the database isn't that false accusation and judgement?

Actually you did steal! Your actions caused a lost to store. You may think it "sucks" but so does the "billions" retailers lose each year to theft

Stealing is the intent to benefit from someone else's assets. I just chose an incorrect option in my point of sale menu. I didn't give a hookup to anyone or anything else to benefit my own self. I'd call it violation of company policy over theft. That assumption is just unfair.

Call it what you like its still legally theft. I understand your point and you can certainly argue that in court but the legal cost will exceed the fines.
