I am a landlord, I was renting out my property on a month to month basic's.
Tenants had junk (not running, and no tabs) Vehicles, about 7, sitting thur out the rental unit's yard.
I mailed ( 1st class) a letter to them demanding the removal of all the junk vehicles by a certain date (15 days) In the meantime they were also running tho there 30 day notice for eviction for nonpayment of rent..The 15 days came and went, all vehicles were removed but 1, they were gone from the property, and I had no way to contact them, so on the 24th day after the letter for removal of vehicles, I had it towed out for a cost to me of 500.00.
The next day the tenants contact me and demand there vehicle back, it is now in storage at a towing yard...I told them they would have to pay the 500.00 for the towing.. they refused and are now taking me to court for unlawful tow...Was I right or wrong in this, and now what do I do..

When you say the tenants had left, did they give you the keys? Were the utilities on or off? Were there any items left in the rental unit?

These are all questions a judge is likely to ask to determine whether the rental unit had been vacated/abandoned or not.
