Hi there
I have been living in a complex that has been undergoing construction for the duration of my lease. When I signed my lease in June of last year, I was told the construction would be done by January of this year. Not only has it not been completed, but there has been an enormous amount of issues such as dust and debris left everywhere, as well as items being stolen from apartments during balcony renovations, scaffolding issues (people climbing and breaking in), door security issues, emergency exits being blocked, door to the roof being left open (providing access to apartments), smoke detectors being covered, leaking in the car garage, etc, etc. We are not being compensated for the loss of our balcony and storage unit, which is still being advertised. I just had a construction worker attempt to enter my apartment last week. Good thing I was home! I know they have been breaking various codes throughout this construction and I just now found out that it will continue for the next at least 3 months (right when my lease ends).
What are my options to get some compensation or break my lease? Do I have to start a lawsuit? What are my rights?
