I fired my building contractor before the job was finished because he demanded
more money than the contract specified. I got three estimates for completion of the job, sent the contractor a check for the balance minus the middle estimate. He sent back the check and is demanding the original balance, plus
an additional $2400.00 dollars. What is my recourse in this matter? Any similar
experiences out there?
Thanks:mad:

What you owe is governed in large part by your contract. What does it state about early termination? If it says nothing, then send him the check, tell him its for the work that was done and itemize everything left to do and what it will cost (which adds up to $2400, natch) and that this is a reasonable settlement. He can sue you if he thinks he's entitled to more, and that if he does you will countersue for your costs of repairs of his defective work. Don't be surprised when he slaps a lien on your property.
