So, lady was giving away FREE a shelving unit. We emailed, I called the next morning to pick up, she said she had offered it to someone else but that actually she did already offer it to me so I could go ahead & drive to pick it up. I drove the 1/2hr & picked it up. I get home to a phone call from her. The 2nd "buyer" had called her in the meantime, threatening to "SUE HER FOR 800 DOLLARS!". I would have laughed him off myself but she's nervous now & wonders if she should pay me to drive it back to her. Just need someone to explain the law to me so I can pass it on to her so she doesn't give this lunatic bully anymore thought.

The law won't get involved in this.
First of all, its CraigsList.
Secondly, the owner had no contract with the other person.
She may have promised it to her, but promise absent consideration doesn't a contract make.
If he sues, the former owner (the donor to you) need only defend.
But, dude won't sue.
That's the reaction of an upset human being, just gotta shoot the old pie hole off.

Relax, tell the donor to relax, and ignore the blabbing, empty threat buffoon.

I don't think we have any one here who knows much about Canadian law.

Canadian or not, the lady has nothing to worry about. Nobody is going to successfully sue her for not giving them something for free.
First come, first serve. She can just ignore the other person. They will go away.
