About a 20 months ago, I agreed to help a friend with poor credit by getting a credit card and putting her name on it as a "secondary" card holder. She had numerous income problems and I felt for her. Over that time she managed to run the card up near its max (currently at $11,000 balance). She has always made the monthly payment and has not made any further charges for the last 4 months. I put a hold on the account to make sure no further charges can be made. We have attempted to remove my name from the account, but have twice received the same denial from the card company (Chase)- reason is that her credit is still not strong enough. Our friendship has deteriorated over the past months, and I now spend time wondering if she will just suddenly leave me with a huge balance. I believe having her name on the card as "secondary" means that her credit is just as affected as mine if she doesn't make a payment, but still I worry. Additionally, she has sent me a couple emails over the last few months (which I have saved) stating that she WILL pay off the entire thing by November (next month). So, my questions....first, is there any way to get my name off the account? And second, is the email she sent me stating she'll have it paid off next month something that I can legally hold her to? I fully acknowledge I am an idiot for getting myself into this situation...I am a trusting person and that has certainly bit me in the you know what. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!!:)

Q: So, my questions....first, is there any way to get my name off the account?

A: Yes; pay it off and then cancel it.

Q: And second, is the email she sent me stating she'll have it paid off next month something that I can legally hold her to?

A: Sure. You can get a judgment against her. But what will she pay it with?

You need to make sure you make the payments on this each and every month and never be even one day late.

Thank you

Thanks for the help. Couple more questions though. What exactly do you mean by "get a judgement against her"? I am quite unfamiliar with legal terms. And being that she is making all the payments (she has made all the charges as well), what if she suddenly didn't make a payment? She has stated in emails to me that she always will (again I have kept these). Could she be held legally accountable (as opposed to me) for paying this thing off? thanks again!
