Hi. I am a retired legal asst. unable to get to the law library. My address is almost the same as an apartment complex across town. UPS routinely leaves packages on my doorstep that do not belong to me. In the past they expected me to return mis-deliveries to one of their stores which was a big hassle since I am disabled and can't drive. Now I try to call the local number and tell them that they have once again left me something that's not for me. Since many of these deliveries have an apartment number on them, and I live in a house, it is irritating to say the least. The company's attitude is that I am not doing my job unless I contact them and make sure mis-deliveries are picked up. NO I DON'T WORK FOR THEM - THAT'S JUST THEIR ATTITUDE. I am tired of this. If I do not open the package, what is my legal responsibility to care for packages that are left on my doorstep that aren't for me? Can I simply toss them in my trash can without calling UPS and making sure they come get it? I think you can get in trouble for this if its US mail, but this is a private company, and I am tired of working for them without being paid. I am concerned with any criminal statutes that might apply if I just toss their stuff in the trash. Thanks.

What a horrible situation.

It depends how cheeky you wish to be.

What I would probably do is bring it in, and write a letter to the intended recipient, saying their package has been delivered to you, you have notified UPS of the mistake, and that you are waiting for UPS to come pick up the package.

I wouldn't give them your address, name, anything.

Let /them/ call up UPS hopping mad about the mis-delivery, when in turn, I bet they will cal the shipper, who will also call UPS.

Someone will convince UPS to come get the package from you, I'm sure. :)

Often they have phone numbers as well, you could try giving the person a ring and telling them they need to call UPS.

I know it's a hassle, and I know it's not your fault, but UPS will mark it delivered and make the other person's life a nightmare trying to get what they paid for, and that's not fair either, is it?
