Afew weeks ago I was t-boned by a usps mail truck. I was ok but my car was totaled. the driver received a ticket, she said it was second such wreck in short period of time. The usps has not contacted me at all except through claim form they sent in mail. They want me to send two statements from dealers or other disinterested parties stating cost of my car when it was new, year I purchased it, value of car before and after wreck to consider paying the totaled fee. I feel they should be calling me and looking at the car. Why do they want year I purchased car and the price I bought it at? Should I get a lawyer? I am disabled and this is really a hassel for me since I am on oxygen 24/7.

Think about it, this is Uncle Sam.
Uncle Sam is the worst crook of all crooks.
In fact, it can often be impossible to hold Uncle Sam liable, even when his minions are in the wrong.

I suggest you strike while the iron is hot!
Yes, they want you to tell them about your car.
When you bought it, where you bought it, what it cost new, what it was worth the minute before it was destroyed, etc...
You should complete the forms, or get someone to help you.
The sooner you get the information back to them, the sooner they will respond.

But, if you want to speed things up a bit, contact YOUR insurance company.
File a claim with them and they will subrogate against Uncle Sam. (Well, they will TRY!)
That might ease your burden a little bit.

I'm glad you weren't hurt badly in this accident.
You may have lost a car, but you still have your life.
Sure, this is a pain, but at least you're still among the living!
I hope things work out well for you.

If you are properly insured, then ALL of this should be handled through the insurance companies. Any request that is made directly to you should be forwarded to your insurance company.
You set yourself up for disaster if you handle this alone.

I think that is a BAD idea. He should allow his insurance company to work all this out. If the car is totaled then there is much more than just the value of the car to consider.

Personally, I would not return any of their documents. Forward the requests to your own insurance company, then complete what ever documents that YOUR company asks you to.

The dirty little secret is sovereign immunity.

If you don't play it their way, they don't pat!

The insurance company could assist.

Something tells me that there might only be liability involved.

Well it isn't a criminal matter... I don't think any kind of immunity is in play here. It is all about civil liability.
