Debt paid, but still being garnished

Okay, so I stopped paying on a credit card for a while, got taken to court by debt collectors, we had a repayment plan worked out. I paid the amount agreed on for the first two months($50), then the third month I came up short and I only paid $35. They went ahead and applied a hold on my bank account AND a wage garnishment against my paychecks, both for the full amount I owed them - $800.

I worked it out and I got the bank to go ahead and cut them a check for the full amount owed, since I managed to get the money in there but the hold wasn't going to release for a few more weeks. As of Tuesday, August 25, the payment was sent to them and they accepted it, and the hold on my bank account was lifted. As of today, September 5th, they have yet to contact my employer to lift the garnishment. I'm now sitting here short of about $500; I'm unable to contact anyone at the debt collection agency to get them to notify my employer, and they're scheduled to still take another $300 out of my paychecks.

Karmic implications of the situation aside, is there anything I can do about this? I've had a few people tell me I need to get a lawyer because the debt collectors are taking money that doesn't belong to them, but I don't think this is quite right since *they* aren't taking it yet, they just haven't informed my employer that *they* need to stop taking it.

If they are not the one's taking ti from your check, then who is? The debt might be for the credit car company, but if the debt collector is the one physically touching your check, they are the ones to talk to or sue. You should have a contact for them. Call them and take it from there. Threaten to sue, and if they give you any crap then follow through.

Send a certified letter by overnight instructing them to stop the garnishment. If they do not stop go to the court that allowed the garnishment and file a Traverse with a complaint for damages to ask for the money plus interest that they overdrew.
