Nearly 5 years ago I was fired from a job as an EMT. I never knew the actual reason why I was fired; I thought it was regarding an incident between two EMS agencies that did not go smoothly. There was no physical altercation or crime committed, it was just a disagreement that became "extremely verbal".
To my surprise, I found out recently that this former employer has been reporting to potential future employers that the reason I was fired was because I abandoned a patient (plus other inflammatory comments regarding my delivery of healthcare).
For the record, I was never involved in any legal actions regarding this incident. My license has never been subject to review nor was I ever investigated by the state licensing bureau for any claims of abandonment (or anything else). In fact I just received a renewal of my license valid until June of 2010.
Is it worth pursuing legal action to silence my former employer, obtain a retraction, and/or attempt to collect on damages? If so, what is the appropriate legal specialty would be best able to try my case? This occurred in Wisconsin. Thank you.
