I was fired from my position as an associate pastor at a large church because of a difference of opinion with the head pastor. Following my termination, the head pastor and other pastors wrote a lengthy letter in which they made false derogatory accusations about me and asked the church members to treat me and my family as "unbelievers." The letter was posted on a church website and e-mailed to church members. Not only have these actions caused me and my family great emotional trauma, but my character has been impugned which would make it difficult to find employment elsewhere. What can I do?

Sue them all. If they are posting un-truths about you, and you have suffered from that negative act (which you have), then yes, you have a case.

There are several Federal and State laws and so forth that CAN protect you.

I would look into Title 42 United States Code, browse the section, such as sec. 1983.

You could also file with your local court a Temp. Restraining order/Order of Protection and make them stop these fales statements, and you may even be able to challange what they have put in your "employment file" or what ever you call it, and make them give you a good recomendation.

IN the end, I'm saying you can do something, just depends on how far you want to go.
