My dentist removed a gold crown to do some root canal work. It was agreed that I would go back a fortnight later and have the crown replaced. When I went back, my dentist had 'moved on' and I was now under the care of a new dentist. It seems that my gold crown has been lost in the re-shuffle, and I have to pay for a new one. Yesterday I got a call from the surgery saying that as the price of gold has risen, the cost of the new crown is much higher than the price I agreed to.

As the price of gold has risen, then the value of the one the surgery lost has also risen.

Do I have any redress in law to negotiate a lower price on the new crown?

I would be grateful for any pointers. Thanks.

Laws in your country are different than the US, but similar.
It seems to me that you have a valid argument to make against the first dentist regardless of their "moving on". The dentist removed the gold crown and kept it. Even if the dentist does not perform the service for you, the dentist at least owes that gold crown. Are you able to work this out with an insurance company? If not, speak with a lawyer to see if you can get some assistance.
