On Decenber 9, 2008 we signed an agreement with a flooring company to lay a wood floor in my house. The date the work was to be done was January 17, 2009. A check for $1500.00 was given to the contractor as downpayment. When we attempted to call for a delivery date this week, we discovered the phone was disconnected at the business. Upon further investigation, we were told by a neighboring business that the Flooring company went bankrupt. The check was cashed the day after he received it. What steps need to be taken to recover our money?

Find out whether the company still exists, and if it does, whether it is bankrupt. You can find this out through your state's corporate registry and/or bankruptcy court.

If it still exists, sue it in small claims court. Or notify the bankruptcy trustee of the debt owing to you. You might have to get in line behind with its other creditors.
