my landlord received a subpoena to go to court for a debt I have through a collection agency . Why is that? And can they do that?

The process server could have served the wrong person, because the plaintiff likely named the wrong person to be served.
You might want to go to court and see what the clamor is all about.
Or, call a local lawyer and ask him or her.
