I was caught trying to steal about $5 worth of pens at my campus bookstore. I was detained by security and they took a statement, my picture, and my information. This was my first offense and they kept asking if I've stolen before and I kept saying no, they seemed to be in disbelief but it is true. No police or campus police was involved. I was told that depending on how I behave during detainment and upon review all the footage of me ever coming there before, and if they find footage that I have shoplifted before they would later call campus police and have me arrested. I was very cooperative and I confessed in the statement hoping that they might not fine me. Otherwise, I was told that I might receive a fine from the store and get an email for a meeting with a counselor to make sure I have no psychological problems. I was told that I am not banned from the store as well. My question is, will I be arrested or receive a court order?

You might receive a letter from the store for a civil demand fine. If you pay it, they "probably" (as long as you haven't shoplifted before) will not pursue further/not have you arrested.

Thanks for the reply, under what circumstances would they pursue this further? They shouldn't be able to find evidence of previous shoplifting because this was my first time. Even If they just felt like it, would they be able to try to arrest me?

They could have you arrested for shoplifting. You did shoplift. However; for the small amt. of $5.00 if you pay any civil demand fine in a letter that you might get, they most likely will not pursue further. If you don't pay any civil demand fine they may request, there is more of a possibility they will pursue further.

Disagreeable, this meeting they mentioned to me about determining whether I acted out of family or psychological problems, could that actually be a meeting to discuss student conduct charges? The security guard did not specifically mention student conduct charges, she only said that I could be arrested if reported to campus police.

There is NO way WE could know any of this.

Next time, don't steal, stop stealing, this ain't your first rodeo, cowboy.

Ask the people that send you the communications.
