About five days ago I was at the register and stole something around $5. At the time I wasn't thinking, and after the fact I threw up about how stupid of a move that was. There are cameras in the store but I'm not sure if they saw me. I don't think they did, because I went to work the next couple of days and nobody said anything to me about it. However I'm still very upset and worried about this. After reading a lot of post from this site I'm thinking if I should go in to work and I am confronted with LP or manager, should I not confess to anything. But even if they try and make me sign a paper and I say "I want an attorney." they'll probably just call the police??? I'm not sure if that's what I want since I have a petty larceny case that's been sealed five years ago. (I went to court about that and did probation work, fines and whatever.) I know, I'm pretty stupid, not thinking. Would I be arrested???? Should I let them call the police and if I don't talk to the police wouldn't that make them more pissed?
I live in NY state.
Thank you.

Since nothing has happened yet this might be premature. Keep in mind if questioned you do not have to answer or sign anything. They of course can file Police report or fire you

I understand I don't have to answer or sign anything. But I have a feeling if I was caught I would just be fired and have to sign a slip, maybe pay a fine. But is it worth it to just refuse to sign and not say anything and get the police involved since I have a sealed case from the past? Thank you for your help.

That is your call. Just because your told if you sign somethng its over does not mean its the truth. They could tell you if you sign there will be no further action and Police not called then call after you sign. read carefully any document your asked to sign then based on how its written then decide. You can also keep in mind any admission of guilt will guarantee you will not get any UI benefits if fired. There is nothing to force you to sign or admit to anything. You will need to read and pay close attention to all documents and statements made before you agree to anything
