Divorce with a military man.

I am looking for some answers involving divorce. I am married to a service man he is currently in Virginia and I am in California, I have a 2 year old with him. I just want to know how this is going to work out? the reason for the divorce is because our relationship is not healthy at all neither for us or our son, i think separation would be the best for us. I need help ASAP.
