Ok so I was 17 and supposedly shoplifted under 70 dollars worth of stuff. I done a diversion program and asked after it was done when I had to pay the civil fine and my court designated worker said "you dont have to pay because the criminal case is solved and closed theres nothing else they can do to you." So I sent the lawyers who demanded the fine money proof i done a diversion program and they said "you still have to pay" and they are from NY. I didn't even shoplift and I already made the move to college and Im 30+ miles away from where it happened now and I can barely afford my electric bill yet alone pay a fine for something I didnt do. Do I have to pay the fine if the case is closed with the court? Im in KY.

Not paying Civil Demand can carry severe consequences. Why they told you not to pay I dont understand since its state law. They can do any or all of the following

. Triple fine
. Send negative report to credit reporting agencies (on you or your parents since you were a minor)
. Sue you or your parents in court and they will win. They will be awarded the inflated fine plus court cost and legal fees

I recommend users pay this fine. Now whether or not the law firm takes any or all the actions mentioned above we cannot say. Its a crap shoot so are you a gambler or not

How much is the fine? the retailer is entitled to the money, no matter what the court says. when you say you didn't shoplift what do you mean?

They will hound you for seven years and charge extra fees. my advice is to contact them and work out a payment plan that is suitable for you and the firm.
