i was arrested and charged with shoplifting 35 dollars worth of stuff two days ago. I go to court in a week and I'm worried that I need a lawyer because I don't want this on my record. it is my first offense but I'm almost done with school and don't want this stupid mistake to affect me getting a job when I graduate.any advice as to what to do

Do you NEED a lawyer? No.
Do you WANT to keep a clean record and have the best possible outcome? Yes, lawyer up.
If you can't afford a lawyer then request one be appointed to represent you when you go to court.

Agree, get a lawyer or ask the court if they will appoint one for you if you can't afford one. A lawyer will help you get the best outcome possible. Ask the lawyer about plea options such as ACD or diversion.

Yes, by all means, always hire a lawyer or ask the judge if you qualify for a taxpayer funded lawyer. We all need a lawyer.
Have you hugged your lawyer today?

I am a Retail Theft Consultant and answer questions like this daily. Short answer is yes you need a lawyer. This is especially true since you seek a plea deal that would protect your record. If you cannot afford an Attorney request a public defender on your first court date and plead not guilty. When you meet with your Lawyer ask about the previously mentioned ACD or Diversion. these programs vary but usually protect your record. I would also advice you get consultations from several local Attorneys. Many will do this free on first visit. Ask about your options. The Public Defender (if granted one) will spend limited time with you so its best you arm yourself with info prior to meeting with PD
