I have a written offer to purchase my Mexican timeshare in Puerto Vallarta. The buyer, an American business, says I need a Mexican RFC (tax id number) to complete the transaction. So I am trying to figure out how to obtain the RFC. I am a US citizen living in the US.

Use your favorite web search engine to search for how to obtain a Mexican RFC - you should be able to get much of the information you need there.

Yes, thank you, I have already done a lot of that. Perhaps I should clarify my real question: do I actually need the RFC in this situation?
Frankly, I'm surprised you didn't need one when you bought the timeshare.
This forum is designed to assist people with US law matters. You will need to reach out to the folks in Mexico for information on their requirements. You may wish to contact an attorney in Mexico.

I bought the timeshare a long time ago, when the enforcement of the RFC for such transactions was very lax. (And of course I did not know anything about it.) During the recent years the Mexican government has ramped up the use of the RFC to prevent money laundering and other forms of corruption. So now it seems that I need it to sell the timeshare.

Does your contract allow for the sale of the timeshare? I suggest you contact the company that manages your timeshare and make sure you are able to sell.

Also keep in mind many of these "businessmen/woman" are scammers.

Thank you, yes, I will be contacting the timeshare to discuss this sale. I am very wary of scammers as well. I am trying to do my due diligence... hence my questions to this very helpful website.
