I was allegedly caught shoplifting about $60 worth of merchandise from a store.

I have a clean criminal record, other than a couple traffic tickets.

I have recently become a single mother and do not work.

Do I really need to hire an attorney?

No, you don't need to hire an attorney, if you are unable to afford an attorney, you plead NOT guilty; and ask the court to appoint an attorney to represent you.

Then you STOP blabbing, and speak only to YOUR attorney.

You don't want to plead guilty or get convicted of this.

It will ruin your life.

You will have trouble getting a job, and many other aspects of your life will be ruined if you get convicted.

So, plead not guilty, ask for a lawyer, and wait.

Never ever get caught up in anything illegal again.

If you get a break on this, that is your one do over for all time.

Agree -
Plead not guilty.
Ask the court to appoint an attorney for you if you can't afford one.
Talk to no one but the attorney - you might, as suggested above, ask your attorney about ACD or diversion.
Don't steal again.

Just so you know there is a criteria for a Public Defender. Depending on your income marriage status etc you may or may not qualify. Contact the court see if they can tell you the qualifications. Regardless you should seek out local Attorneys for consultations many offer this free on your first visit get as many as you can. Arm yourself with knowledge ask about ACD or Diversion

She "most likely" has a pretty good chance of qualifying for a public defender since she is a single Mother & does not work. (though it's true we don't actually know anything about any income/assets she might have) She can certainly ask for one/ask if she qualifies for one.
