I am a student at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. On Saturday night I was in a friends dorm room drinking then we went outside for a cigarette. When I was going to head back inside I saw a campus police officer in the entrance so I used the other entrance and sent a text message to my friends telling her not to go in that way and to text me when she got to her room. After I went inside the officer came outside and told my friend that she had to go with him so she did. He took her inside to lobby and told her he needed to see her I-Card (student ID card) so she gave it to him. After that the officer said take me to your room so she did, when they got to her room the cop told her that she had to let him in to her room and she looked at him and didn't say or do anything. When the cop saw this he got mad and kept telling her that she was required to let him in her room until she finally let him in to her room. When the officer got in the room he saw the beer and my back pack he searched my back pack and told her that she was to call the owner of the back pack (which was me) and tell him to come to her room and she did. When I got to her room a police officer answered the door and he told me to get into the room so I did. He asked for my I-Card and state ID so I gave it to him. He then started to ask me questions. I made the mistake of admitting to the bringing the beer and he threatened to charge me with furnishing alcohol to minors, I'm only 18 I did not think that was possible. Then after he found out that I was an Eagle Scout he told me he was not going to charge me with furnishing alcohol to minors but he was going to charge me with the university. Then I asked him what does that mean? What could happen? He told me that he handled the criminal part only and left the room without telling us what exactly we were being charged with. Was the search legal? Does the police officer have to tell us what he was charging us with like a police officer would that was not a campus police? Our campus police officers are real police officers they have to have their act 120 and the police department is a state recognized police force.

Q: Was the search legal?

A: Hire a lawyer. Whenever you are charged, at the hearing on the charge when they try to introduce evidence from the search, have your lawyer contest it.

even though i am only being charged in a university court?

Even though i am only being charged in a university court? Should I still get a lawyer? I was never told what i am being charged with can they still charge me? I thought that the police had to tell me what they were charging me with in a specific amount of time?

Sounds like a lawyer could make it a lot simpler for you and answer all of your questions also 18 is young to start a record. Might wanna be more a bit more careful for a few more years.
