My brother's ex-girlfriend took his small mixed dog to the dog park in Clearwater, FL. She was there for a while when out of nowhere this pitbull attacked my brother's dog. It maulled his dog and took chunks out of his body, left teeth puncture wounds, bruising on his head from being thrown. My brother's ex approached the owner to get their information and she didn't call the police, she took the dog to my brother's job and he took the dog to the vet. His dog was bad with severe injuries and the vet wanted to keep his dog for observation overnight, but he didn't have the $500, so he was given medication and told to monitor the dog and bring him back the next morning at 8am. When my brother contacted the owner of the pitbull, the information given was false and the numbers didn't work. I told him he should still go to the police station file a police report and have his ex give a description of the dog and the owner & if she saw what vehicle they were driving. What can he do to get justice for his dog?

Typically, dogs don't get justice... the owners do.

There really isn't much to be done at this point unless you an think of a way to identify the owner. If the owner of the pitbull provided anything less than an ID card or driver license, then the police should have been called to make a report of the incident and identify the parties involved. Considering the circumstances, she probably didn't want to wait around for the police with the dog in such bad shape.

Were there any witnesses to the incident? Go back to the park and ask around if anyone saw anything. Maybe the same guy will be there with his dog. If you find him, don't confront him.

All that said... you can still contact the police and make a report. They won't want to take it... but since the guy provided false ID then it can be taken as a crime rather than a civil issue between the owners. If you, or they, are able to somehow identify the owner of the pitbull then things can proceed... but I assure you that they will not actively investigate this case since there are no leads. If you can get a license plate or an address of the owner and provide it to the police then they may go ask some questions... you will have to do legwork on your own to get things rolling.

If there is anything to learn... keep your dog on a leash in the park... sounds like they weren't.
