Our bull dogs attacked a man who was cutting through our smallholding next to the house but not inside the fenced area of the houses. Was in the mielieland right next to the house. Don't have neighbours nearby. We fought like crazy to get the dogs of the man and then took him to our local government clinic. Police came the next day and the guy claimed my husband assaulted him. Police came back again 2 days later and now they want to charge the owner of the dog. We are not the owners of the dog. My father in law is but we live in separate houses yet on the same property. Not in the town on the outskirts on a plot. Want to know what our legal rights are? Is the guy not trespassing. This is not public land/property.

You note your jurisdiction as Africa. This is mainly a US law forum. Laws are different in different countries. I don't know if anyone here will be able to answer your question for you. You might talk to a lawyer (or whatever they are called in your country).

No matter your jurisdiction, I suggest you rethink your story.

You start out by saying: "Our bull dogs attacked a man who was cutting through our smallholding next to the house but not inside the fenced area of the houses."

You tell more about what YOU allege happened, then you go on to say: "Police came back again 2 days later and now they want to charge the owner of the dog. We are not the owners of the dog."

You should never make any statement to the police in any country, unless you are unlucky enough to reside in some police state (if that were the case, its highly unlikely you'd be doing anything but what you were told).

You try this angle, you're going to increase your problem quotient.

Bottom line, less is always more, nothing is even less than more!!!!!
