About 2 years ago we were paid by a company for a job. they paid us the money, and then they kept paying us. we told them stop paying us your have already paid. then they realised, and asked us back for the money. so we gave back all the money. another $5500 was given to us at one point 2 years ago by them, and was forgotten about, because we didnt realise that they had double paid again.

Now 2 years later they are asking for this $5,500. However we have already spent this money... Do we have to pay them back? It has just been such a long time, isn't there a deadline which they would have to claim back their money from?

Yes, you have to pay them back. Statue of limitations on debt collections average at around 5 years in most states so you will have to contact them and let them know that you don't have the money to give back all at once but that you would like to propose an installment payment.
