My son is applying for dual citizenship/Italy. All necessary papers have been gathered and we are in the process of having them translated to Italian.

The first date the Consulate of NY could give us was March 2010.

Is there any way to expedite this process? There are adjunct consulates but they tell me there is not one for Westchester County.

We have worked long and hard for this dream to be fulfilled, but the Italian Consulate is very difficult to work with.

Any suggestions? Is there anyone who could help us expedite this? Many, many thanks for listening.

In most countries there is a process to expedite citizenship applications, but you must have good reasons to be place higher in the queue. I was granted Irish citizenship 1 year earlier than expected because I am married to an irish diplomat and was to all intents and purposes representing Ireland overseas. A diplomatic passport makes travel and work easier as well. Having said that, it still took a year to process.

Generally you need to write to the responsible department or Minister requesting that your application be expedited and giving your reasons.

Please dont blame the consulate - it is not their fault, they are constrained by those working in Italy - Citizenship applications take a long time to process - up to 2-3 years in the case of Ireland, so my advice is to be patient.
