I am a dad in Texas who's 17 yo son and a couple of his friends decided to egg some cars and were caught. They were all arrested and charged with criminal mischief and interfering with the safety of the railroad, they crossed RR tracks to do the egging. After a night in jail the interfering with the RR charges dropped. None of the boy's have any criminal history and are normally good kids. On the night this happened one person who's car had been egged came into the police station and was told to get three estimates. Since then two others who were egged have called the police and were told to do the same. So far one bid has been brought in and the detective handling the case feels it is very high. I have been contacted by one attorney by phone and was told if we retain him now he "can almost guarantee" all charges will be dropped and the people who have filed complaints will settle without going to court,"but now is the time to act". He wants $400.00 and will not charge any more provided we don't go to court.
My question is should we get an attorney?

It is up to you on whether or not you want to hire an attorney. The kids should pay for the rapie of the cars, but if ytour goal is to get charges dropped, then perhaps an attorney is a good idea. An attorney cannot guarantee anything, if you feel comfortable than hire him.

By the way, if that were my kids he would be getting a job and be paying every dime spent on this whole thing.

Duranie thank you for your reply. The boys will be paying for all of the cost as well as loosing all rights and privileges, grounding and a daily reminder of just how stupid and inconsiderate they were of others well being and property. One boy has a job the other 2 are looking. Automobiles may be sold in order to pay for this as well as collage selections will be changed due to the lack of maturity and abuse of trust. We want our kids to learn the lessen we all tried to teach them. We do not want the charges dropped just to get our kids out of trouble but we want the punishment to fit the crime. I posed the question of heiring an attorney from having never gone through this and not knowing how the process really works. We are getting information from the detective who says he wants the boys to be punished but not be taken advantage of. As I said an attorney contacted me by phone and said that now is the best time to act to get the best deal and basically not to trust the detective. Who do we trust?
Thanks again and the boys will not get away with this.
