basicly the questions are is there a difference between embezzlement and grand larceny in the courts eye? and is this charge a big one for a first time offender?

They are different crimes. The offenses are probably both serious and the severity of the crimes will depend upon the jurisdiction that you are in. For example, in New York, the following is the code section and the charges for grand larceny -- all are felonies, a serious charge.

155.30 grand larceny in the fourth degree E non-violent felony
155.35 grand larceny in the third degree D non-violent felony
155.40 grand larceny in the second degree C non-violent felony
155.42 grand larceny in the first degree B non-violent felony

A felony charge is a serious one, regardless of first time offender. You want to defend this and if not dismissed, hopefully get it reduced significantly and to no more than a misdemeanor.
