If an employee wants to request their employee file - what is a reasonable amount of time to give the employer to product the documents? Is 24 hours unreasonable?

I'd say so, yes. The file may not even be on the same site where you are, or some or all of it may be online and have to be pulled. Most states which require an employer to provide employee files on request (which does NOT include NJ - in NJ, if the employer says no, you cannot see your employee file, there is no law that will force him to change his mind) give the employer at least 3 days to a week (some longer). 24 hours logistically would simply not be possible in many places.

Just to reiterate, in your state, short of a court order your employer is NOT required to allow you to see or have a copy f your employee file, so the question of what is a reasonable time for you to "give" the employer to produce them is a moot point.
