I am a hairstylist in Springfield, MO. My employer has decided that if we need someone to cover a shift and that puts them into overtime that we have to pay their overtime ourselves. Also, they want us to clock out for breaks but we aren't aloud to leave the salon. On top of all of this they are going in and adding breaks into our shifts so that they don't have to pay us as much. They are also deducting money from our checks for supplies because they don't feel that they should have to pay for everything even though I signed nothing stating that this was ok. This is only half my problems but for starters, is any of this legal?

Most of it sounds illegal to me.

If you're not getting the income someone working overtime is generating for the store, why should you pay their overtime wage? I would hazard a guess this violates whatever employment standards legislation MO has. Check online to see what that is. Employers are required to pay employees' wages - not other employees.

Deducting money for supplies may also be illegal. Business expenses are typically supposed to be borne by the business, not by the employees. There are some grey areas - e.g. a worker could be required to supply their own chainsaw, but the gas would be a business expense borne by the employer. Things like shampoo and conditioner or whatever are probably business expenses and should not be charged to you.
