I was hired by a German Company with an office in the US. At the time of my hire, I was told the company was financially sound, had been in business for 70 years, etc. Once I started, I found out the US branch of the company was about the go out of business. I was hired as a last ditch effort (using my name and reputation in the industry) to assure the customers the company was not going out of business. I spent 6 months reassuring customers and rebuilding the trust lost by the company. One of the main customers was in fact making plans on what to do when the company did go out of business. We did not go out of business, but after 1 year, they laid me off.

My question: Do I have any legal recourse? I would never have left my previous job to go to work for a company on the verge of "closing it's doors" if I had known.

Yes, you can apply for unemployment insurance through the Texas Workforce Commission:

You should have done a more thorough job of vetting your potential employer, just as they were vetting you, you should always vet them!

Sorry, no case!
