Circumstances: A man has considerable credit card debt (in his own name) beyond what could be paid through his cash or insurance. The same man owns a house that is in both his and his wife's name with perhaps 70% equity (his only real asset). Does the state of Virginia require the sale of the house to settle the debts of the man?

The state doesn't require it; the creditors do. The state permits and enforces it. But yes, the creditors can force the house to be sold.
