What assets should we use to pay for my Mother's impending nursing home care? My 86-year-old widowed Mother was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's. After her only sister's death 5 years ago she became the sole owner of a vacation home built by my grandfather 60 years ago. That home is now valued at nearly $300,000.00. My sister and I will inherit all my Mother's assets, per her will. Should we sell the cabin to pay for her care? If we do so, are we obligated to share the proceeds with my two cousins? My grandfather's will did not address this, but only stated that if the event of one sister's death, the title to the vacation home would go to the surviving sister. My two cousins have expressed an interest in retaining the vacation home for their respective children. My sister and I have no children. My Mother owns her home valued at approximately $700,000.00. She has approximately $225,00.00 in investments along with her Social Security income of about $800.00 per month. My Mother is agreeable to either retaining the vacation home or selling it prior to her death. She does not want to establish a trust so that my cousins may secure current partial ownership of the vacation home. They had asked her to do this some years ago and she declined.
